NABITY CALLS FOR SERIES OF DEBATES
Candidate Wants Open Discussion

(Omaha, NE—December 1, 2005) Today, Republican candidate for governor Dave Nabity called for a series of eight debates that would include all three Republican candidates for governor. Nabity sent a letter to the other two candidates informing them of his proposal.

“There are so many serious issues confronting us," Nabity said, “each issue deserves more than a 30-second sound bite. Our differences should be aired in public forums, in an open discussion of ideas. Nebraskans deserve to hear directly from the candidates as to how they will govern this great state and their plans for the future. To help the people make an informed choice, we need to tell them where we stand on the issues.

Nabity proposed a series of debates beginning in January and held twice a month until the end of April. The debates would be held in a variety of locations around the state, so all Nebraskans would have an opportunity to hear from the candidates.

Members of the media in the following cities have agreed and are excited about the opportunity to host and sponsor a debate: Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, Scottsbluff and Norfolk. A list of those interested in hosting or sponsoring a debate is attached. Cities such as South Sioux City, Columbus or McCook also could be approached to host one of the eight debates. Each debate would be one hour long and focus on a specific issue.

Nabity said the issues to be debated would be agreed upon by the candidates, but he suggested that tax relief, government spending, education reform, water policy, the future of agriculture, health care, creating economic growth and crime would be logical choices. Nabity said debating is the best way for voters to learn the differences between the three candidates.

“It seems a reasonable request to have the other candidates make themselves available to debate for a total of eight hours over a four month period, beginning in January 2006 months,” Nabity said.

“When there is so much at stake, don’t these important issues deserve at least a one-hour discussion?” Nabity asked. “I believe Nebraska is worth the effort.”
